One-Day Itinerary: Schwangau – Neuschwanstein – Alpsee – Schwansee – Schwangau

Our day begins with a ride on bus №78 from the town of Füssen. In just a few minutes, we arrive at the «Hohenschwangau, Neuschwanstein Castles» stop — the starting point of our adventure. Ahead lies the ascent to the legendary Neuschwanstein Castle. The path is easy, paved with asphalt, and within 10–15 minutes, we reach the first viewing platform.

rom here, a majestic view of Lake Forggensee unfolds, while on the other side, you can see the Pöllat River canyon and the fairytale-like Neuschwanstein Castle, standing grand and enchanting.

We continue along the trail that begins to the right of the castle. After approximately 400 meters, we reach another viewpoint. From here, an incredible panorama unfolds, showcasing Hohenschwangau Castle, Alpsee Lake, and the majestic surrounding mountains. The scenery is breathtaking, as if a painting has come to life.

A little farther ahead, we come to a suspension bridge over the rushing Pöllat River. From this bridge, Neuschwanstein Castle reveals its full splendor — appearing as if it is floating above the ground.

After enjoying the views, we head back to the shuttle bus stop that brings tourists to the bridge. Here, the upper trail begins, leading around Alpsee Lake. The walk along this trail is peaceful and comfortable, with a smooth and easily accessible path.

After 2.5 kilometers, we come across the first trail descending to the lake. The descent is gentle and smooth, about a kilometer long, and soon we find ourselves by the water.

A walk along the shores of Alpsee becomes a true retreat for the soul. The trail is lined with plenty of benches and cozy viewing spots where you can pause, have a snack, and simply enjoy the scenery — surrounded by nature in its purest and most serene form.

After 3.2 kilometers, we ascend a small hill where we have a choice: return to the bus stop (just 1 km away) or continue on to the next lake — Schwansee. We decided to keep going! After another 600 meters, with a slight ascent and descent along a winding path, we arrive at the lake.

Schwansee (Swan Lake) truly lives up to its name: graceful swans can be seen gliding majestically across the calm surface of the lake. However, if you try to feed them by hand, be careful — they’re not as gentle as they appear and might give you a painful bite! 😊

The route around the lake and the road back to the bus stop total about 3 kilometers, completing our journey. The entire path is about 12 km, and every minute of it offers tranquility and vivid impressions. All the trails are marked, and signs are placed in the right spots. Since it was mid-November, there were very few people on the route. We arrived at Neuschwanstein Castle around 10 a.m., and the main tourist crowds hadn’t yet arrived, allowing us to fully enjoy the beauty and quiet of the area.
